Physicians and surgeons at the NewYork-Presbyterian Transplant Institute are nationally recognized for their contributions to the advancement of heart transplantation through scientific and clinical research.
Current research examines topics including:
- Risk stratification to optimize transplant candidate selection
- Use of new mechanical assist devices as bridges to transplant
- Use of new immunosuppressive drugs
- Immunological monitoring for the development of acute and chronic allograft rejection
- Non-immunologic monitoring for acute and chronic allograft rejection
- Expansion of the organ donor pool by using 'high risk' donors
- Assessment of myocardial recovery with mechanical assist support
- Analysis of outcome of transplant candidates with co-morbidities
- Multiple organ transplants such as combined heart/stem cell transplant for patients with amyloidosis, a disorder that results from the abnormal deposition of a particular protein, called amyloid, in various tissues of the body, which can cause serious changes in any organ
- Prevention and treatment of transplant vasculopathy (disease of the blood vessels).
